Dear Sir,
I read yesterday's sports article (Who should it be?) with relish in the fact that you have mentioned three individuals who have had their turn at the helm in the capacity of National Football Coach.
While I give my respect to Devar and Scott, they cannot compare to the astonishing football mind of Andrew Bascome.
I can say without fear of contradiction, that there is no one in Bermuda or has been someone with the technical mind, determination and passion of Andrew.
I can remember him as a little boy, dressed in a rain suit with his football in his arm trodding to Bernard Park to go through his regimen of fitness and ball handling skills ¿ all of this in the rain!!!
That is what the passion of the game is about, when this child prodigy was selected as a "boy" in a man's game at a very tender age, to play for the North Village Community Club, where despite his diminutive size, he stood head and shoulders above the rest of Bermuda's football fraternity.
Such was his prowess, he received an "automatic" call to not only join, but play on the national team.
We now fast forward to present times and Andrew's legacy still continues, where he has guided every team under his leadership to either Cup honors, or a remarked improvement in the standings ( St. David's for example).
Andrew's resume reads as such that even foreign coaches would gasp in awe at his accomplishments. His vast knowledge of the game, his footballing intelligence belies his age and can only be comparable to men many years his senior.
BFA, Bermuda public, can we please get past the negative comments about this highly intelligent man (and not just football ¿ but also academically ¿ he is a former Berkeleyite..RESPICE FINEM!).
The many comments about his "beliefs" or his "religion", and his open admission that he smoked, should be put to rest (just look at the many followers of Obama, Clinton..who openly admitted to drug use but became either President and nominee).
Andrew has the respect of the people under his charge, just look at his results!!!
Give Andrew the chance like everyone else, give him the opportunity to prove his GREAT football mind and let him show that with him in charge, Bermuda will see the result that they are looking for.
And finally, if Andrew is given the opportunity, there will be only two stumbling blocks, ¿ and that is the BFA hierarchy's inability to stop meddling in the affairs of the very same people that they have entrusted to get the job done and the lack of commitment of the players selected.
I have always said that I would rather lose with a team of committed and dedicated players, rather than try to win with a bunch of household names looking for a free trip.
ANDREW DESERVES A CHANCE!!!!!!
Respectfully yours
A W Joell Sr
