Soccer seven get BFA scholarships
Seven of the Island's most promising players will further their education overseas as part of Bermuda Football Association's (BFA) Legends Scholarships Awards programme.
The third edition of the annual presentation at the National Sports Centre's cricket pavilion last week saw Tre Ming, Zeiko Lewis, Roger Lee, Shakhai Trott, Anthony Hunter, Dominick Wright and Philip Parsons receive grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000.
In the past, the programme had only one scholarship designated specifically for a female but this year saw the best applicants awarded regardless of gender.
Bermuda international Roger Lee, who was awarded the Hon. Hugh Richardson Scholarship for $10,000, said: "Education is the key to success because there is always life after football, which means I have to concentrate in school and have to be focused along with having the right mentality. I am determined to be the best that I can."

Darrell ton sinks Somerset
St. George's 258-5; Somerset 139
Clay Darrell stroked a superb century to help St. George's beat Somerset by 119 runs in the Little Cup Match in the West End at the weekend.
Defending champions Somerset were unable to shackle Darrell whose unbeaten 101 allowed St. George's to declare with a formidable total, losing only five wickets.
Showing some of the class displayed by his father, Clay Smith, Darrell dominated the bowling throughout his stay at the wicket, smashing 13 fours and five sixes.
He was well supported by Okei Bascome who contributed a well-played 83, hitting nine fours and four sixes while Machai Simmons stroked 17 and Christian Burgess 16 not out.
Kavon Fubler, a reserve for Somerset in this year's Senior Cup Match, was the best bowler for the West Enders with two wickets for 25 runs off seven overs with a maiden. St. George's batted for 34 overs.
David Bernard and Darrell overpowered the Somerset batting line-up, combining to take eight wickets between them as the home side were dismissed in 53.5 overs.
Bernard finished with four for 19 in 15 overs while Smith claimed four for 41 off 16.5 overs.
Cecoy Robinson offered some resistance for Somerset with a fine 67, hitting seven fours and three sixes, while Fubler scored 30 (six fours) and Mike Johnson 11.
Island pair miss out on final
Bermuda internationals Taurean Manders and Keishen Bean have missed out on playing in the United Soccer Leagues PDL finals.
Manders' Brandenton Academics lost to Ventura County Fusion 6-1 in the play-off semi-finals in Texas on Sunday.
Bean's Fury were defeated for the first time this season against visiting Ocean City Barons to end their hopes of winning the Northeast Division Championship last week.
Bean said he hoped to rejoin the Canadian outfit for next season: "I was very happy about our season," said the former Bermuda Hogges attacker. "We went undefeated all season and won the league only to lose in the Conference finals.
"I played an important role with my team and I'm happy that coach Steve Okane chose me to play for Fury. I'm looking to sign with them next season and to go even further."
Lewis sidelined by injury
Keston Lewis has been ruled out of Bermuda Hogges' final match of the USL-D2 season after picking up a foot injury against Charlotte Eagles.
The Trinidadian midfielder limped off at the end of the first half following a full-bloodied challenge with an Eagles defender at the National Sports Centre on Saturday.
Hogges drew the match 1-1 thanks to a Kevin Richards equaliser in 89th minute. The league's bottom league take on Real Maryland Monarchs in Maryland on Saturday requiring a win to give them their highest ever points tally.
Trott 12th at Pan-Ams
Long distance runner Sean Trott placed 12th in the 5,000 metres at the Pan-Am Junior Championships in Trinidad at the weekend.
The 19-year-old, who placed fifth in the Bermuda Day Marathon earlier this year, posted a time of 16 minutes, 19 seconds.
Trott has enjoyed an impressive season and won a bronze medal at the Carifta Games last month in Cuba.
