Spot kick decider – why I just couldn't afford to miss
I almost incurred the wrath of the New England Revolution coach Stevie Nicol this week when I assumed the penalty taker's responsibilities against his consent.
Thankfully I scored the penalty to win us the game against Mexican side Pachura in Wednesday night's SuperLiga match.
If I'd missed I think Stevie would have gone absolutely ballistic!
It was an injury-time penalty with the scores level at nil-nil and I just really fancied it – I always fancy my chances from the spot.
I told Shalrie Joseph, our designated taker, that I wanted it and he said 'yeah, go ahead'. It was my first ever penalty for the Revs, although I've taken a few for the reserve team and I have a pretty good record.
I could hear Stevie screaming on the sidelines for me not to take it but I felt really confident and put it away. In hindsight it could have turned sour for me if I'd missed and I'm sure Stevie would have had more than just a few words for me.
I don't think he would be as forgiving and I'd probably be playing for a different team by now!
But it all turned out okay in the end and as long as we don't lose to Chivas USA this weekend we'll progress to the next stage of the competition.
We had a bit of an eventful journey to California yesterday and had to divert to Oklahoma after a guy started taking his clothes off on the flight.
He was off his rocker and the police had to come on the plane and handcuff him – it was all quite strange.
It's been a good experience for us to test ourselves against some of the top Mexican sides though. They may be in their pre-season but you can still see the quality of their players, especially their first touch.
If ever Bermuda face Mexico at least I'll now have a bit of inside knowledge on them.
Earlier this week the Revs had to say goodbye to valued squad member Chase Hilgenbrinck.
Chase decided he wanted to train for the priesthood in the Catholic Church and we're all sad to see him go.
He is a good player and had played for the first team. Chase told us that's the direction he wanted to take in his life and we all respect and support his decision, and wish him all the best for the future.
I'd also like to say congratulations to my Revs team-mate Michael Parkhurst who has been selected for the USA's Olympic team.
We'll miss him for a few games while he's in Beijing, but it's a fantastic opportunity for Michael to represent his country at such a prestigious tournament.
I gather that Andrew Bascome will be helping out with the Hogges and I think that's a great move for the club. I worked with Andrew for a while at Dandy Town and he's somewhat of a footballing guru in Bermuda.
He's definitely up there with the best coaches on the Island and I think he'll have a positive impact.
See you at the corner flag.
