St.David's 'have what it takes' to win again, says president

St. David's president Aaron Lugo believes that raw talent and team harmony is behind his team's success in the Lindo's Twenty20 competition.

St. David's will meet Somerset in the semi-finals the National Sports Centre this weekend, while St. George's meet Willow Cuts in the other semi.

Lugo's side are the two-time defending champions and are unbeaten since the tournament's inception.

So far in their title defence they have pushed aside Young Men's Social Club, Western Stars, the BCB U-19s and Willow Cuts, while the past weekend saw them gain points without a ball being bowled due to Hurricane Igor.

While the competition isn't over, Lugo believes he has a side that has what it takes to come out of the weekend as champions, with the backing of not only the club but also a community.

"We don't have any specific strategy on how to win in this format, we just go out on the day and play how the game needs to be played as circumstances change," said Lugo.

"We rely on our natural talent and team harmony to get us though rough patches.

"It is important that we perform well given we are the two-time defending champions and are looking to make it to the finals again.

"We have a community behind us as well. There isn't one person who doesn't back us when we play, whether it's football or cricket, so we do this for them as well.

"We said at the beginning of the season that we would take it one game at a time and it does benefit all those involved in the club that we are the champions and can hang our hat on that.

"At the beginning of every tournament it is every man for himself and teams are gunning for the champions, and although we have come through unscathed thus far, we still have a lot of work to do before this is done."

In last year's final, St. David's beat Police by five wickets to claim their third trophy of the season, while beating Somerset in the inaugural year.

Heading into last weeked the two Eastern clubs were unbeaten.

Although the hurricane wreaked havoc on St. David's, the club suffered only minor damage and Lugo reckoned training would be as intense as ever in the build-up to the semi-finals.

"We will be training as hard as ever this week. The club didn't suffer too much damage and obviously we will have some debris and whatever else on the field but for the most part we are fine.

"Some people are still without power and hopefully we can help those in any way possible.

"Somerset is one of our favourite teams to play. We beat them in the final two years ago and they were unbeaten until a few weeks back so it will be an interesting game and I'm sure fans of both teams won't be disappointed."
