St David's looking to start year with a win
The Belco Cup might belong to Southampton Rangers but St David's will be favourites to win the first trophy of the season.
In a clash of the two dominant sides on the Island last year, St David's, generally recognised as the best team in Bermuda, will be expecting to face Rangers in tomorrow's final at Lords.
Rangers were given the cup to keep for good after they won it for a fifth time in 2008, and just for good measure they then thumped Social Club last year, racking up their sixth victory in the competition, more than any other club on the Island.
The final everyone expects to see depends on Rangers beating Bailey's Bay today, and St David's coming through their semi-final at PHC. And while neither games are foregone conclusions, it would be a major upset if Bay or PHC made it to Lords.
While Rangers have won the cup more times than anyone else, St David's have won it just once. But they have a side packed with stars and at any one time can field a team of 11 current of former internationals.
They can even afford to be without bowlers Angelo Cannonier, who is off the Island, and Greg Foggo, who is injured.
"It would be nice to start the season with a trophy, we haven't won it for a while. I was playing the last time we won it," said St David's coach George Cannonier. "That's the only time we've won it, I can't recall what year it was, but Ken Pitcher was captain.
"We've been talking about how we would like to start the season with a trophy, but it's not going to be easy. We have to get past that first hurdle (PHC) before we can win the trophy.
"We don't have all our players available, we don't have a full strength team, but we still have a strong team. I would love to have had Angelo and Greg available, but we've still got a good side, we've got a mixture of youth and experience, it's a well balanced team."
