St. George's triumphant in Bowlers' Cup Match
Warwick Lanes came alive last week as 36 St. George's cricket fans defeated 31 Somerset fans at the annual Bowlers' Cup Match.
While the fun tournament saw the East Enders field five more players than their opponents, it was the fact that their team averages were ultimately higher that decided the outcome.
The competition began with Somerset captain Erwyn Bean leading his squad on a victory march around the Lanes as his side were the defending champions.
And when St. George's captain, Betty Lespere, got out for a 'duck', the West Enders probably believed the trophy would remain in their hands.
But with the help of Anthony Zuill's 'century' and Derwin Smith's 'half-century' in the first innings along with Dennis Trott's 'half-century' in the second, St. George's won both innings with a team average of 148.53 (5,347 runs) and 150.5 (5,418 runs) respectively compared to Somerset's first innings total of 143.29 (4,442 runs) and second innings of 141.58 (4,389 runs).
St. George's were assisted with 10 'fours' and three 'sixes' from their players in their first innings, and 14 'fours', four 'sixes' in their second while Somerset were only able to muster 10 'fours' and one 'six' in the first innings, and nine 'fours' and two 'sixes' in the second.
The two teams were fairly evenly matched as far as 'fours' and 'sixes' were concerned, but Somerset had a 'double-century' by Alfie Santucci that brought them to victory in the third innings with Carl Reid assisting with a 'half-century'.
However, when the final figures were calculated, it was St. George's with an overall average of 446.08 for 16,059 runs, who stripped Somerset (433.97 for 13,449 runs) of their crown.
Founder of the event, Lionel Dowling said: "The three innings of the competition ran smoothly amidst the sound of calypso music.
"The MVP for St. George's was Graeme Furbert who accumulated a total of 564 runs for his team."
