STARS COME TO AID OF STRICKEN TEAM-MATE
Western Stars Sports Club have come to the financial aid of club cricketer Gershon Gibbons who suffered a stroke last month and had to be airlifted overseas for treatment.
The 36-year-old Stars all-rounder remains in high spirits at a Boston rehabilitation clinic where he continues to make a "steady recovery".
In a show of support, Gibbons' team-mates and friends have pledged to raise funds to help offset their colleague's medical expenses.
"We will be collecting a donation to give to Gershon to help him with medical expenses and he really appreciates all the support he has received from everyone back home," commented past Stars president, Cal Blankendal, who paid the cricketer a visit last week.
Since transferring from childhood club Flatts, Gibbons has played an integral role at Stars and is one of the last survivors of Albert Steede's team that dominated the earlier part of the decade.
"Gershon is in good spirits and is making his way to a steady recovery and has the support of his family and loved ones there by his side," Blankendal added. "His spirits are high and he is motivated to make a full recovery.
"Gershon is currently on a physical recovery programme to re-strengthen his muscles and he was glad to see a fellow club member and friend drop by to extend well wishes.
"I took along some greeting cards from club members and friends and he was also very appreciative of that touching gesture."
Gibbons is expected to remain in Boston for at least another four to six weeks before he is released and anyone interested in making a donation towards his medical expenses is asked to call Cal Blankendal at 505-7999.
