Steede brace gets Cougars off to flyer
Southampton Rangers 1
Devonshire Cougars 4
Devonshire Cougars got their league campaign off to a winning start yesterday, emerging comfortable 4-1 winners over Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval.
A brace by influential player/coach Kwame Steede and solo efforts from Lejuan Simmons and skipper Domico Coddington paced the big cats to the win, while Korvon Tucker scored an own goal.
Steede and Simmons set the tone for the visitors scoring two goals in the opening 10 minutes as Cougars dominated the match from the opening whistle.
The FA Cup champions charged into the lead in the sixth minute when Simmons was on hand to stroke his effort home before Steede struck two minutes later to put the match beyond Rangers before it had really started.
For the home fans it was bitter disappointment to the beginning of the season, with so much anticipation before the opening whistle.
To compound their misery, Coddington made it 3-0 in the 30th to all but end the match as a contest after the pacey winger latched onto a through ball and ran clear run on goal, slotting past Jason Smith in goal for Rangers.
The half-time speech from coach Keith Jennings didn't have any affect in the hosts as they come out in the second half to seemingly make up the numbers on the pitch.
They were gifted a goal after Marriko Iris saw his shot deflect in the Cougars net off of Tucker to get the side into the goal scoring column-albeit an own goal in the 35th minute.
But the celebrations were short lived as Steede was put through with a long ball over the top and the veteran planted his effort into the bottom right hand corner in the 57th to confirm his men were leaving Southampton with all three points.
With their fans coming to the match in strong force, the side cruised the rest of the match and almost netted a fourth, but substitute Mark Steede narrowly missed out on putting his name on the score sheet next to his brothers.
The match did have a few boiling moments, particularly late on in the match with sub Juma Mouchette being on the receiving end of some cynical tackles, yet referee Anthony Mouchette let cooled heads prevail and didn't show any cards.
The 2008 champions sit on top of the table after the first round, with a date against St. George's Friday night, while Rangers will look to bounce back against new boys St. David's in their next match.
