Devonshire Cougars 1

Just as they did on Thursday night by winning by a single goal against Town in a Dudley Eve clash at Devonshire Rec., Cougars yesterday pulled through at the same venue on a goal by Kwame Steede after 68 minutes to deny the visitors a deserved share of the points in this Premier Division clash at Devonshire Rec.

Steede clinched it with his cloge-range shot after combining with Lejain Simmons who floored Town with the lone goal on Thursday night.

But Town have to be kicking themselves for letting this one get away because they held a decisive edge of play in the opening half and then managed to match their opponents for majority of the second half.

With Cougars' seemingly struggling with a lack of self-belief in the opening half Town looked full of explosive striking potential with lanky forward Lashun Dill causing all sorts of problems to a Cougars' defence which looked jaded and proved to be rather substandard for the remainder of the game.

After just four minutes Dill skillfully dribbled by two defenders and laced a cross that was just a little too high for hard-working Nahki Wells who did well to get his head to the cross but watched as it sailed a few feet over the bar.

Cougars' defence were able to brush off a wave of pressure until 23 minutes when Jahmel Swan headed a Dill corner that Ricardo Brangman in the Cougars' goal did well to smother.

Cougars slowly came into their own and managed to force three corners after 28 minutes but they each came to nothing.

After 34 minutes the crafty Weeks came close to giving Town the lead but his thunderous drive brushed off the bar and was cleared.

Ten minutes later the home side's defence had another scare when striker Raymond Beach slipped through the middle only to have the ball toed away by a desperate slide by centre-back Kijuan Franks.

Both team's coaches had to obviously find a way to inspire to attack with more purpose, especially Cougars who had no vision when inside the box and indecision in most of their approach work.

Town were always creative in the middle of the park and a goal always seemed imminent to come from their ranks.

During the first 10 minutes of the second half both teams did in fact slip into another gear with play becoming more interesting than in the entire first half.

Cougars' striker Mark Smith angled a shot wide after 48 minutes while Lashun Dill put a fierce shot inches outside of the post at the opposite end as the intensity increased at both ends of the pitch.

Town's centre-back Jared Peniston was the first to find the mark however, his thunderbolt from 18 yards went straight at goalkeeper Brangman after 62 minutes.

But six minutes later during a counter attack Lejain Simmons and Kwame Steede combined with the latter putting his side ahead like he has done so many times before.

Two minutes later they could have gone 2-0 up but substitute Lemuel Weeks made a mess of a cross by substitute Shaki Minors, astonishingly putting the ball over from just six yards.

Town responded with menacing runs by substitute Heys Wolfe and the explosive Nahki Wells but neither were on target with their shots.

Right at the end substitute Darion Simmons could have added another for Cougars but his drive from 16 yards was sensationally saved by goalkeeper Mikkail Crockwell.
