Stovell leads Rangers with bat and ball
Young Men's Social Club 196
Southampton Rangers 197
Dion Stovell claimed four wickets and cracked an unbeaten 86 to steer Southampton Rangers to a seven-wicket thrashing of Social Club in a repeat of last year's Belco Cup final at Lords on Saturday.
The occasional off-break spinner ripped the heart out of Social Club's batting order, returning outstanding figures of four wickets for 42 off ten overs.
Stovell was introduced into his team's attack as a third change bowler and proved to be the catalyst behind a major batting collapse that saw Social Club, who were sent in to bat, lose six wickets in the space of seven overs and 23 runs.
Swing bowler Ryan Belboda (two for 37) and seamer Malachi Jones (three for 24), the Rangers captain, added good support in restricting Social Club, who at one stage were 92 for two, under the double century mark.
Top bat for Social Club was opener Damon Robaine who scored 34 followed by tailender Nelson Bascome jr who added 33 and Dwayne (Streaker) Adams who contributed 30 at the top of the order.
That Social Club reached their eventual total owed much to some wayward bowling by Southampton who tossed down 30 wides and three no-balls.
Having dominated with the ball, Stovell picked up where he left off with the bat, carving 12 fours off 95 balls and sharing in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand worth 124 runs with player/coach Janeiro Tucker that powered Rangers to victory with 14 overs to spare.
Tucker smacked seven fours and two sixes during his unbeaten knock of 58 off 51 balls and like his partner at the opposite end never looked in trouble at the crease.
Seamer Jeff Tyrell (two for 48) was the pick of the Social Club bowlers who toiled in vain on a flat pitch in searing heat.
St. David's CC 182
St. George's CC 184-5
The father and son combination of Oronde and Herbie Bascome engineered an unbroken 67 run sixth-wicket stand that powered five-time Belco Cup champions St.George's to a five-wicket upset over fellow East Enders St.David's at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday.
Skipper Oronde hammered an unbeaten 49 off 88 balls in a knock containing seven fours while father Herbie slammed two sixes and two fours off 29 balls to remain undefeated on 33.
Number four batsman Ryan Steede lashed a boundary-filled 50, that included ten fours, off 46 deliveries to keep the pressure on the St.David's fielders.
St.George's lost early wickets chasing their opponents' target but recovered thanks to a 76-run third wicket stand between Oronde Bascome and Steede, which set the stage for the match-winning father and son partnership that carried the East Enders to victory in the 33rd over.
Justin Pitcher topped the Islanders' bowling, claiming four for 42 off eight, while skipper Lionel Can had one for 29.
Earlier St.David's plunged from 41 for one to 87 for five in the space of seven overs as veteran seamer and assistant national coach Herbie Bascome turned in an inspired performance with the ball.
Bascome snared three for 44 off ten overs while seamer Rudell Pitcher and leg spinner Jade Foggo took two each.
St.George's, though, were costly in the field as they gave up 35 runs in extras.
Justin Pitcher smashed a whirlwind 43 off 36 balls, thumping three sixes and three fours along the way to lead the Islanders' batting.
St.David's youngster Drewonde Bascome also chipped in with 25 batting at number ten while skipper Cann hit 26 off 17 balls.
