Summer's work about to pay off for Tony

Andy Bray

Bermudians will get their chance to see the newest beach sport this weekend when the Beach Tennis Bermuda (BTB) will hold their first annual Beach Tennis Bermuda International Championship at Horseshoe Bay Beach.

Tony Brannon and partner, Belmont Tennis Shop pro Mark Cordeiro, will be hosting the event, which is a new idea to the Island, and hoping for locals to come out and enjoy the events.

"I first saw the game in Aruba and put it together in Bermuda along with my partner," said Brannon. "We have been working this idea all summer, even playing in tournaments abroad.

"I have played in Miami recently, and we also had a Bermuda team which was myself and Andy Bray play in the Italian Championships in July, so the sport has really been accepted worldwide.

The setup for the game is quite simple. The court will be nine metres by nine metres, with the net standing at five feet, nine inches and the point system to be the same as tennis.

"There is a warm up day on Friday starting at noon followed by a cocktail party at the beach running from 5-7.30 pm.

"Saturday is the day in which everyone can come out and see the professionals of the sport compete against one another. Top prize for the pros is $2,500 for first, $1,000 for second and $500 for third.

"On Sunday is the fun day where the locals can come out and enjoy the day. There will be prizes for those who do really as we play.

"For the best local amateur men's team, they will win two tickets to Aruba to play in the Aruba Championships in October.

Registration can be done either on the website at www.beachtennisbermuda.com or people can register at Horseshoe Bay by 10 a.m. on which ever day they choose to compete in and sign up then.
