Survival's still main target for Boulevard

Boulevard defender Ajani Gibbons is pleased with the start his side has made to the season, but has called on his teammates to continue their early season form when they take on Devonshire Cougars tomorrow night at Devonshire Rec.

Blazers head into the match in fifth place, one place and two points ahead of their city rivals, having won two games, drawing three and losing just once, their last match against North Village when a Keishen Bean goal late on settled the game.

Gibbons, who has been his normal steady self in the heart of the defence, believes the side can still improve with players coming back off the treatment table in the coming weeks.

"We have a few injuries and so forth but we always compete and look to put forward a good performance," said Gibbons.

"It is hard for us and we knew it would be with the circumstances surrounding us and not having a coach and so forth, and training and all that other stuff.

"No one really knows what we have been through thus far in the season, and our results are a result of our character as a team.

"Everyone is playing from their hearts and once we get players such as Reiko and Mel back we will be almost full strength."

The start to the season has seen the club beat Somerset Eagles and Southampton Rangers, while drawing against the likes of Devonshire Colts, champions Dandy Town and St George's.

Given the plight the side was in at the beginning of the season, Gibbons made it clear that expectations will not change, and while the team are heading in the right direction, the main focus would continue to be on survival.

However, the emergence of striker Temiko Wilson, who is the Premier Division's league scorer, may force Boulevard to set their sights a little higher. If the tall front man can continue his early season form, the side may very well exceed their own expectations and look for a potential Dudley Eve spot.

"We never thought we would be were we are now, the main focus was to stay up and keep away from relegation," said Gibbons.

"We are in the top half of the table for now, each player is carrying his own weight and it is showing by our results.

"The start to the season has been very positive and we are looking to kick on with the rest of the games until the Christmas break.

"Temiko has surprised a lot of people, including some of the players as well as the fans.

"He is a committed player who looks to work hard for the team and his form has to be one of the main reasons we are where we are.

"He is the leading goalscorer in the league and it is evident that he can play and we just need him to continue with the hard work."

Devonshire Colts and St. George's Colts, precedes Boulevard's game against Cougars, with the battle of the Colts kicking off at 7pm.

Meanwhile, in a bumper night of football tomorrow, there will also be Shield and Friendship Trophy matches at Somerset Cricket Club.

In the first match Social Club will take on Prospect at 7pm in the Shield Elimination, and following that match will be Southampton Rangers against Somerset Eagles at 9pm.

There is action tonight in Somerset as well, with a First Division double-header which features a top-of-the-table clash between league leaders Robin Hood and second-placed Somerset Trojans.

Hood have a two-point lead over their rivals, but Trojans have a game in hand, and a win tonight would put the Somerset club in the driving seat as the Christmas break approaches. That match is due to kick off at 9pm, with Paget and MR Onions first up at 7pm.
