Swim pair begin Olympic build-up
Olympic Games in Atlanta next year when they compete in Puerto Rico this week.
Stephen Fahy and Stanley Harris, seen as Bermuda's only realistic hopes of swimming in the '96 Games, are being accompanied by national coach Gareth Davies to the Thanksgiving Classic which is expected to attract all of the Caribbean's top competitors.
Fahy will enter his strongest events, the 100 and 200 metres butterfly, as well as the 50 fly, and the 50, 100, 200 and 400 freestyle.
Harris lists the 100 and 200 inidvidual medley as well as the 200 backstroke as his best events, but will also likely swim in the 50 and 100 free.
"This is really the beginning of their Olympic build-up,'' said Davies, before leaving earlier this week. "FINA (swimming's international governing body) have set really tough qualifying standards for the Olympics because they make it clear they want to cut down on the number of swimmers competing.
"So this is a chance for Stephen and Stanley to find out where they stand.
The calibre of competition should be very good. Trinidad, Barbados and Puerto Rico will all have strong teams.'' Fahy and Harris were included in the Island contingent which swam at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada in the summer of '94. But while they've continued a rigid training programme since, others such as Geri Mewett and Jenny Smatt have stepped out of the sport while talented breaststroker Chris Flook has been forced to quit with a shoulder injury.
Davies left with Fahy yesterday and will be joined in Puerto Rico by Harris who is travelling down from the University of Massachusetts.
The meet runs from Thursday through to Sunday.
