Telecom are the pacesetters

league at the half-way point of the season following their victory in the feature match on Friday night at Somerset.

The defending champions defeated Rude Girls 4-0 to create a three point cushion over the latter in the standings, with a maximum six points from three matches played thus far.

Rude Girls, meanwhile, slumped to their first league defeat, giving them a record of one win, a draw and a loss on the year.

A pair of goals on either side of the interval paved the way for an easy victory by BAA. Lesley Cherry, Claudette Baisden (two) and Cassandra Wales emerged as the heroines in the contest.

After dominating much of the early going BAA finally broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when a floated corner-kick by Terry Lynn Paynter saw the ball find the head of skipper Cherry, who planted her effort past goalkeeper Essa Melakot.

Six minutes later it was Paynter again playing a vital role, dribbling down the right side before squaring to an unmarked Baisden at the edge of the penalty area.

Baisden released a quick left-footed shot that sailed into the top left corner to double the score-line.

The avalanche of pressure by BAA continued toward the half as Rude Girls were kept pinned in their third of the pitch.

Little changed after the break and few were surprised when Baisden added her second, the team's third, in the 54th minute after a feed from striker Lisa Young allowed the former easy access to the back of the net.

Charyse King had a golden opportunity to pull one back for Rude Girls moments later, but watched in agony as BAA 'keeper Cassandra Trott saved her drive from close range.

Substitute Wales finished off the rout, calmly controlling a Tanya Semos cross before firing home.

Somerset Terminators paid for their failure to convert early domination into goals and in the end were convincingly beaten 4-0 by Dandy Stars, who collected their first points of the season.

All of the scoring came in the second half with Carol Ann Wade, Sharleta Brangman, Rebecca Sousa and Shemel Dickinson finding the range for the victors.

Despite Somerset's controlling of the play in the opening half it was Stars with a clear chance to open an account when a penalty was awarded for a foul as Wade was fouled in the area by defender Gina Thomas.

However, Rose Kirkpatrick's spot-kick went directly to goalkeeper Antoinette Williams.

There would be no reprieve for another defensive blunder by the west enders in the 51st minute as Joy Simons' failed clearance fell for Brangman, whose shot deflected past a stranded Williams.

Seven minutes later the advantage was doubled. Williams slipped while advancing to collect the ball and an alert Wade followed up to tap home.

Sousa took her turn in the spotlight after 71 minutes from a free-kick, where the ball was nudged forward for her to curl around the wall and into the right side.

Dickinson closed things out three minutes thereafter, shouldering the ball over the line after defender Lisa Robinson had an initial blast parried against the crossbar.

Somerset had the ball in the back of the net as time dwindled when Kennisha Cann apparently scored, only to have the tally cancelled for offside.

The result enabled Stars to leap-frog out of the cellar ahead of Somerset.
