Ten shot lead for Island's quartet

While Bermuda's gymnasts are taking the Island Games by storm, the golfers remain on track to make a similar impression.

At the half-way stage of the 72-hole tournament, Damien Palanyandi leads the 77-strong men's event by one shot over his second-placed team-mate Jarryd Dillas. And a further shot back, tied for fifth, is Daniel Augustus, winner of the recent Bermuda Amateur Strokeplay Championships.

Having set the tone on the opening day when the first round was played at the par-72 King's Course at the Alands Golf Club, Bermuda players continued to hit fairways and greens and sink putts at the par-71 Castle Course yesterday.

And nobody did it better than Palanyandi who carded a superb three-under 68 ¿ the lowest score of the tournament so far ¿ to move into the lead at two-under with a total of 141.

Dillas, the first-round leader, fired an even par 71 to take his score to one-under 142. Augustus followed his first-day 73 with a one-under 70 and is at even-par 143.

The fourth member of the team, Camiko Smith, shot 74 yesterday to follow a first-day 76 and is in 16th place on seven-under after 36 holes.

Those combined scores mean Bermuda lead the team event by a commanding 10 shots over their closest rivals.

Meanwhile, the Bermuda's women's team are also contending for medals in a field of 10 islands after two solid rounds.

Ebonie Burgess is in fourth place at eight-over par after rounds of 77 and 72. Tariqah Walikraam is sixth with identical rounds of 77 (11-over-par).

In an entry of 43, Katyna Rabain is 15th (84-84) and Katrin Burnie 31st (99-83).

Round three will be played on the King's Course today.
