Thompson must re-apply for job

Kenny Thompson

Kenny Thompson has been told he must re-apply for his own job with Bermuda Football Association (BFA) officially advertising for a full-time national team coach.

Thompson, whose current part-time deal runs until the end of the Digicel Cup, has been encouraged to send in his resume - with the BFA also looking to hire a full-time youth director.

The surprise decision is part of technical director Derek Broadley's re-structuring of his coaching staff, which he wants to mirror the set-up he established while working as Crystal Palace's academy director. The BFA are also looking to appoint five male and three female coaches on a part-time basis.

Broadley said he had been impressed with Thompson's performance as national team coach and described him as an "excellent candidate" for either full-time position.

"I'm sure both positions will be attractive to Kenny but he must decide what he wants to do," said Broadley.

"I know he has worked for the BFA on a full-time basis before and you'd have to ask him whether he'd like to do it again. I've been happy with his performance so far.

"I've not approached anyone as that would be very unprofessional. I'm just going to look at it from a clear view and see who applies."

The Bermuda coach's new job description will include managing a team of national team youth coaches, while the youth director will also be in charge of the women's national team.

Broadley firmly believes there is sufficient talent in Bermuda to fill all the vacancies and said the technical committee would review all applications with interviews scheduled for mid-September.

"It's important the national staff coach and the national head coach is the same person. It's open to anybody and there are no restrictions. Several people have approached me since the word's been out. Since I've been on the Island I've met many people both informally and formally who'd like to be involved but for whatever reason have not been in the past," he said.

"I'd like all the positions to be filled by Bermudians, but if Bermudians don't apply then we will have to look overseas. However, I firmly believe we have the people on the Island to fill all the positions."

He added: "I just don't think our coaching structure is there at the moment."

Since Thompson replaced Keith Tucker at the national team helm he has overseen four full internationals, including a famous 2-1 victory over Trinidad in Port of Spain in June.

n The Bermuda national team will prepare for this month's Digicel Cup in Cayman Islands at a training camp on the East Coast of the US, where they will play at least one match against unconfirmed opposition.

Fulham goalkeeper coach Vic Bettinelli, who travelled with Bermuda to Trinidad for their recent World Cup qualifier, will once again be assisting with the coaching throughout the first group phase of the tournament.

The BFA have also requested for Khano Smith and Reggie Lambe to be released from their clubs New England Revolution and Ipswich Town.
