Thompson takes championship win
The Conrad Tools National Mountain Bike Points championships concluded on a chilly morning at Ferry Reach Park on Sunday.
With Men's 'A' category points leader Neil de ste. Croix unable to compete due to an injury, the path was clear for Garth Thompson to take a comfortable win, that is if seven laps and over an hour of toiling in the saddle can be deemed comfortable.
Mark Hatherly showed late season improvements to take runner up after taking a few wrong turns and surrendering the lead in the first lap.
Grant Goudge struggled during the race but just managed to hold off Paul Jacks and Jeff Amaral who put in a late charge in an epic battle to secure fourth place in the series.
Jack's holding off Amaral by a matter of yards. Both riders collapsing once they crossed the finish line.
In Men's 'B', another two man battle took place for the first few laps with new comer Freddie Phillips just edging out Winners Edge rider Dave Collins to take first place.
This second place proved costly, as only a win would help Collins take the title.
Points Leader Norbert Meyer did not race but managed to hold on to the points lead thanks to Phillips' victory.
Promising youngster Alex Godfrey grabbed both third in the race and the series with another consistent finish.
The only other contested field was in boys under-12, where the Bicycle Works team took a clean sweep.
Christain Oatley on his new bike took second to his brother Daniel and pushed Daniel Hetzel into third for the first time this season.
Joshua Stephenson and Ryan Day rounded out the top five.
Mark and Jessie Godfrey and Kim Naude were the days other winners.
The season finale, the Winners Edge National Championship, will takes place on February 22 at Ferry Reach.
