Thompson to leave Eagles to coach BAA

Kenny Thompson

Former national team coach Kenny Thompson is set to quit Somerset Eagles for First Division strugglers BAA Wanderers.

Wanderers are planning to overhaul their football programme after finishing second from bottom last season and believe Thompson is the man to reverse their fortunes.

It is understood negotiations are well underway and the Woodlands Road club could unveil Thompson as their new boss as early as next week.

Worryingly for Eagles, Thompson's departure could trigger a mini-exodus at White Hill Field as a clutch of their best players believed to be keen to rejoin their coach at BAA.

The well-respected coach has enjoyed plenty of success where he has been, winning the FA Cup and Dudley Eve at North Village and claiming the First Division title in 2008-9.

Last season he guided Eagles to the FA Cup final which they lost to Devonshire Cougars in a penalty shoot-out.

The Howard University graduate, who holds both United States Soccer Federation 'A' and 'B' Licence coaching certification, also coached one of Washington Soccer Club Rangers' youth teams from the Fifth to the First Division of the National Capital Soccer League during the mid-1990s.
