Thompsons tops in 2009 season
Husband and wife, Garth and Deanna Thomson, walked away from Bermuda Bicycle Association's (BBA) annual banquet with the Male and Female rider of the year awards.
Held over the past weekend, the dinner saw the two cyclists claim the sport's top prizes after their outstanding achievements throughout the 2009 season.
In October in Barbados a team of four men and two women competed in the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships where Deanna won gold in the women's time trial, Flora Duffy took silver in the women's road race and Garth secured bronze in the men's time trial.
The combined performance of the team resulted in Bermuda bringing home the second place prize in the team competition.
Deanna also won the time trial and road race at the 2009 Bermuda National Championships.
Garth won the Bermuda National Time Trial Championships, the National Mountain Bike Championship and numerous road races throughout the year.
He also won the first race of the Bermuda Grand Prix.
During Saturday's dinner, awards were presented to Dominique Mayho (Junior Rider of the Year), Tre'shun Corriea (Most Improved Junior) and Nicole Mitchell (Most Improved Rider).
Jeff Amaral and Peter Dunne shared the Club Person of the Year award.
Amaral was recognised for his efforts in expanding the local racing venues that hosted several additional races and Dunne was lauded for his promotion of the junior cycling programme that now runs in half a dozen schools.
Also honoured were the junior and elite teams that represented Bermuda in the Caribbean Championships.
Ten young riders wore the local colours in Bermuda in July when Izabella Arnold won the bronze in the girls' time trial.
Guest speaker at Saturday's function was Magnus Bäckstedt, a former professional cyclist who won the prestigious Paris-Roubaix race in 2004, won a stage of the 2005 Tour de France and was national champion of his native Sweden on numerous occasions.
