Tobago conditions made for tough race – Donawa

Veteran Bermuda runner Jay Donawa came 13th at the sixth annual NACAC Cross Country Championship held in Tobago at the weekend.

Donawa finished the open male 8km race in a time of 26 minutes and 30 seconds.

His team-mate Sean Trott, who met the team in Tobago from Philadelphia where he is attending Lancaster Bible College, came 19th in 27.27 seconds.

Donawa said: "This was my sixth NACAC, and I can confirm that this has been the most difficult course and conditions."

The Island's junior team, consisting of Trey Simons, 16, Dage Minors, 14, Juma Mouchette, 15, Kameron Creighton, 15, and Shawn Herman, 16, were the first time Bermuda has sent a junior team to the NACAC Championships.

The boys team was the youngest in the field.

Team manager April Vesey said: "They raced a fantastic race despite the odds of the sweltering 90 degree Fahrenheit heat, and being run at 3.30 in the afternoon.

"The course was hilly, and the ground hard.

"Unfortunately, Trey Simons had the flu since arriving in Tobago on Thursday.

"He made a valiant effort to race, deciding five minutes before the start to attempt the course.

"Unfortunately, he had to stop after the first 2km loop still feeling the effects of his illness. Dage Minors, the youngest runner in the field, collapsed after 1.5 laps of the three lap (6km) course."

Juma Mouchette was the first home in a time of 21.55 seconds, in 25th place.

Kameron Creighton (29th) finished in 23.3 seconds, followed by Shawn Herman in 24.3 seconds.

The previous five NACAC races have been held in Florida.

n Akeila Richardson is the latest Bermuda athlete to qualify for next month's Carifta Games in Cayman Islands.

Richardson met the B standard in the triple jump with a leap of 10.87m.

Last year Richardson won the bronze medal at the Carifta Games held in St.Lucia.

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, said: "I am happy to say with Akeila qualifying for Carifta all of our medal winners from last year have met the Carifta standard.
