Top golfers ready for cup battle

The Island's best professional and amateur golfers will go head-to-head at Port Royal on Sunday as they battle it out for the Bermuda Cup.

A Ryder Cup-style competition, the two sets of players will compete in singles matches, with one point awarded for each win.

With the likes of Jarryd Dillas and Nick Mansell representing the amateurs, and Scott Roy and Eric West on the opposing side, it promises to be a keenly contested event.

The Bermuda Golf Association has also hoped to reprise the Romay Trophy on the same day, with teams representing the East and West of the Island fighting it out in golf's version of Cup Match. However, a lack of interest means that plan has been scratched.

Other players due to take part this weekend include amateurs, Hav Trott, Camiko Smith and Damian Palayandi, while Dwayne Pearman and Bobby MacRonald will bolster the professionals' team.

Pearman has warmed up for the event by winning the latest round of the Island's Jack Daniels Tour, which took place at Mid Ocean on Monday.

The Port Royal professional led a Port Royal one-two, as Daniel Augustus finished second, his third top two finish in as many weeks.

While August had to settle for a level-par 71, Pearman had an eagle at the second, a birdie at the third, and stormed into a lead he never relinquished. He finished with a three-under 68, three shots ahead of Augustus.

Paul Adams also birdied the second, but his challenge for top spot disappeared under a barrage of three putts. The Tucker's Point pro didn't leave empty-handed though, with Scott Roy unable to play, Adams' fifth place finish was enough to give him a slender one point lead at the top of the Order or Merit.

Eric West finished third on Monday, bouncing back from taking four putts on the opening hole to finish with a one-over par 72, a shot behind Augustus.

Next week the tour returns to Belmont Hills, the venue for the season-ending Goslings Invitational.
