Top runners vie for title
Leading local runners Chris Estwanik and Jay Donawa are expected to go toe-to-toe in the National Cross-Country Championships at the Botanical Gardens on Saturday. Veteran Donawa is a multiple cross-country champion while Estwanik has won the May 24 Marathon Derby for the past two years. Estwanik's wife, Ashley, who ran in the weekend's Front Street Mile trials (see Page 25), could compete in the championships along with top female runner Victoria Fiddick. Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, said over 100 athletes had competed in the cross-country series this season and was expecting a good turnout for Saturday's race. "I spoke to a few athletes like Kavin Smith who has been unable to participate in the cross-country series and I'm expecting to see Jay Donawa and maybe even Chris Eastwanik compete," she said. "I noticed Ashley Eastwanik competed in the trials and maybe she will compete in the championships along with Victoria Fiddick. After the event, the winners of the Cross-Country Series will be presented with their trophies. Watson said Nakeno Creighton and Justin Ferreira were likely to battle it out in the Under-14 boys' race, and tipped Kyrah Scraders, Aaliyah Nolan, Dezhane West and Jordan Bascome to be challenging for the Under-14 girls' honours. The championship races start at 8.30 a.m.
