Tough going for rookie Pak

was a bit-part player on her first appearance in Bermuda yesterday.

Maybe the woman who made major tournaments her first two career victories when she followed a win at the LPGA Championship with another in a play-off at the US Women's Open and has since added two more Tour triumphs, had her mind on other things -- she only celebrated her 21st birthday on Monday.

Playing with Lee Janzen, himself winner of the US Open earlier this year, and senior Hubert Green, who won the US Open the year she was born, she and her team-mates finished last of the eight teams with a score of five-under and had the ignominy of hitting the water at the par-three seventh, where the pin was placed awkwardly towards the front of the green.

But Janzen saw enough to be impressed.

"I've seen her on TV quite a bit, so I've seen her swing, but it's always better to see it up close and in person,'' he said.

"I think she's a fine player but she also seems to be very tough mentally.

She seems to pull off the shots she has to.

"She's got a good short game and she made a couple of tough par putts for us today, even though it didn't really matter because we stunk up the place. But at the time it seemed to matter and she holed two really difficult ones and that shows me she's pretty tough.'' Pak, for her part, was less forthcoming about her own game -- perhaps because her golfing success has outpaced her attempts to learn English.

But she knew enough to say one or two of the right things, among them comments signalling her intention to return for the event next year.

"It was great to play with two such good players,'' she said, indicating her team-mates. "We didn't have much luck but next year we will have a good chance. I'm looking forward to coming back to Bermuda but before the tournament I will have to practise hard.''
