Track star ace Evans sets his sights on more medals
Rising track star Aaron Evans has reflected upon his "tactical race" which saw him claim the bronze medal at the NCAA Championships, writes Stephen Wright.
The 20-year-old came third in the 800 metres with a time of one minute, 46.87 seconds at the prestigious finals held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, last Friday.
He was pipped to finish line by winner Andrew Wheating (1:45.69) and Robby Andrews (1:46.83).
"I'm feeling great after NCAA championships, I'm running fast consistently and that's all I want," said Evans.
"The race was a tactical one, it didn't go out particularly fast but the wind was very strong, so I just tucked in and rode with the pack until the last 300 metres.
"That's when Andrew Wheating came up on my outside and I went with him as long as I could. I knew I was going to be in the top three, but was hoping for a faster time after seeing three people go 1:45 in the prelims."
Evans has now set his sights at adding to his growing medal collection at this summer's NACAC Under-23s in Florida, and the CAC Games in Puerto Rico.
"Going into this summer's competitions I'm very excited because it's just another chance to run fast for my country," said Evans, who is now one of the favourites to take gold at the CACs following the withdrawal of regional powerhouse Cuba.
"At the NACAC Under-23s I'll probably see a couple guys from the NCAA final in my race running for Team USA.
"I've got a lot of confidence in my ability to run with the best, so hopefully I can run another personal best or bring home a gold medal. Either way I'll be satisfied."
Bermuda's Arantxa King also triumphed at the NCAA Championships winning the silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 6.57 metres.
