Trott takes title after Lindo's nightmare finish
Jeffrey Lindo snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the Bermuda Seniors Championship at Riddell's Bay Golf and Country Club yesterday.
In the end, overnight leader Hav Trott held on for victory, a final round 79 giving him a three-shot cushion over Thomas Smith.
Lindo was actually leading Trott by three shots with only four holes to play, but then imploded in spectacular fashion and eventually finished in a tie for fourth.
A triple-bogey seven at 15 undid all the good work in hauling back Trott, and when he desperately tried to rectify the situation at 18, he stuck two balls into the bushes to finish with a nine, and a final round 84.
Defending champion Max Atherden couldn't quite make it four in a row, as he finished third after a final round 82.
Kathy Lloyd Hines, however, had no such trouble, claiming her fourth consecutive title in the women's division, a final round 83 more than enough to see her home, 19 shots ahead of nearest challenger Betty-Ann Sudbury.
Meanwhile, it's been a mixed week for the Bermuda golfers who headed to the US to take part in the first round of qualifying for the US Open.
Daniel Augustus struggled in his attaempt to get through the first phase, hitting a 77 at Disney World's Magnolia Course in Orlando yesterday.
The score wasn't good enough for Augustus to progress, and the Port Royal employee was understandably upset with his performance.
"I'm so flippin' vexed," said Augustus immediately afterwards. "I played so bad, I'm so much better than this."
Jarryd Dillas, on the other hand, fired a 69 to finish third in local qualifying at Metacomet Country Club in Rhode Island on Tuesday. The result was enough to earn Dillas a place in the sectional qualifying round.
