Under-19 skipper upbeat despite Americas failure
Bermuda's Under-19 national cricket team skipper Terryn Fray has deemed the recently concluded Americas Regional Championships a success, although his side missed out on the next round of World Cup qualifying by the narrowest of margins.
Heading into their last match, the side needed to beat Canada to have any chance of advancing but fell five runs shy as rain halted their chase for the required total.
A freak tornado struck the pitch causing the match to be abandoned, putting paid to any chance Bermuda had of reaching their goal.
However, the series of events throughout the week didn't dampen Fray's spirit, with the Bailey's Bay player praising his men for putting their best foot forward – although he admitted there were still lessons to be learnt.
"It was a pretty good tournament altogether," said Fray. "To be honest we played pretty good.
"There were some competitive teams such as USA and Canada, who both had really strong teams and those were the teams we had to beat.
"We had some flaws in the game against the United States that cost us, and against Canada it worked out that the rain came and we lost by a few runs.
"We couldn't ask for much more in that situation.
"So it was unlucky to be honest . . . but like I said before, the game against the US was what we needed to learn from."
It's not known what is now in store for the Under-19s with no future plans having been announced by Bermuda Cricket Board, although some will be hoping to break into the senior national team.
Ineligible after last week's tournament are Chris Douglas and Pierre Smith, both of whom are now over the age limit, and others won't be eligible by the time the next World Cup qualifiers come around.
Looking back on the matches in Canada, Fray was quick to point out that the players had to learn from their mistakes and had to be willing to dig deep and put in the hard work and effort in the future.
As for those hoping to play for the senior national team, the skipper said that patience and knowing one's role within the team was critical to development.
"I'm not entirely sure what is next for us, but hopefully there will be a few tours to keep us in the nick we are in. But I don't really know.
"There a few good players that can make it in the senior level, and now is the time to get them in with some of the older players retiring from the game.
"Next year the only players who will be missing will be Chris Douglas and Pierre Smith.
"Other than that we will have the same players, although the next time around in the tournament most of us won't be available.
"And at that time our players will need to be more efficient in how we go about things.
"Players should know their roles within the team and look to maximise their potential and if this happens I don't see why we won't get back to the top of the Americas very soon."
