Walker: Extra week has made us better

Boulevard's Takehyi Walker runs with the ball watched by PHC's Corey Dowling (6) in this file shot from last year.

Boulevard Blazers Takeyhi Walker believes that the extra week's preparation will bode well for his side as they look to win the Charity Cup this weekend against Devonshire Cougars at Wellington Oval.

The Charity Cup was postponed as heavy storms swept the Island Sunday. The Bermuda Football Association (BFA) took the decision to re-arrange the game after the Wellington Oval in St George's became waterlogged, meaning Cougars and Blazers will have to try again and the women's Charity Cup between Lady Cougars and Lady Rams was also put back a week.

Walker, who had stand out 2008/09 campaign, is confident that come Sunday Blazers will be just and focused and ready to lift the first piece of silverware on offer for the season.

"It wasn't a blessing for us, we were prepared and ready for the game," said Walker. "It was just due to the fact the weather didn't cooperate with what the schedule had planned and it enabled both sides extra time to prepare.

"The extra week gave us some extra time to tighten up some things that can be done better from our side. Our approach is still the same, but like I said the extra week has helped us to fine tune things that weren't quite there."

Walker has produced sterling performances for the FA Cup champions over the last 12 months, including a memorable FA final at the National Sports Centre in which he single handedly crushed Dandy Town on the way to a lop sided 5-3 victory.

Reward for his hard work and commitment was a spot on the U-23 national side that spent the summer playing matches against the USL D2 sides that came to the Island to square off against the Bermuda Hogges.

Having gained vast experience and knowledge of the game itself and how to adapt, Walker reckons his side could very well be at the top of the summit come season's end.

"Playing in the U-23 setup will of course help me, I was getting the experience of playing against foreign opposition and seeing different types of strategies so it will be beneficial for me, both for my club and my country.

"I have come a long way but I still have a lot more to accomplish I feel and everything that the U-23's provided will help me this season.

"I think we have a strong chance of winning the league actually when you take into account the younger guys that are coming into the fold.

"Our team is stronger than last year, and we have additions that have come through from Andrew's youth side who are showing that they are ready as well.

"They are starting to blend in nice and we have depth this season so I think due to these additions we will have a good season and I think we have a pretty good chance of winning the league this year."
