'We can bounce back' says skipper

Stand-in skipper Timmy Figuerido has backed Bermuda to bounce back from their inauspicious start to their Digicel Cup campaign, but admits: "We've dug ourselves into a hole."

Even victories in their remaining two group matches will not guarantee qualification for the Gombey Warriors, and Figuerido believes goal difference could be crucial in determining their destiny.

"Potentially there could be three teams tied on six points, then it comes down to goal difference," he said.

"At the moment we're on minus four, whereas Cayman are on plus three. We're really hoping Antigua beat Cayman and then we know what we have to do."

Bermuda's curtain raiser against Antigua was bittersweet for Figuerido who was awarded the captain's armband for the first time. The Somerset Trojans' stopper was at fault for the first goal, although he did reel off two fine one-on-one saves in the dying stages.

"It was definitely not the result I wanted for my first game as skipper, it was not the result I envisioned us having and it was not the performance I wanted," he said.

"I made a mistake for the first goal and I have to pick up the pieces now. One mistake doesn't make me a bad 'keeper and one bad result doesn't make us a bad team."

Figuerido said a meeting with players and staff yesterday had helped clear the air ahead of tomorrow's crucial clash against Caribbean minnows St. Martin.

"We all had a meeting and a lot of things were discussed by the players and coaches. It was pretty intense and we all needed it.

"We know what we have to do and we must win the next two games. We need to show people what we're made of."

In Wednesday night's other match hosts Cayman beat St. Martin 3-0.
