Why fans deserve more recognition
My team, Baltimore Blast, went to Philadelphia last weekend and managed to pull off a win and are now 6-1 for the season.
John Barry Nusum did not play due to an injury but his team really pushed us to the limit.
We have Monterrey this weekend at home and need to continue our winning ways. We are in search of another championship and must keep developing each time we step on the field.
This week will be a great memory for many around the world as Barack Obama takes the presidency in the USA.
People all over will will be making their presence felt in Washington DC, and yes I also will be in attendance to be a witness and share the experience with many others of history being made by a man that has touched the world with his grace, confidence and intelligence.
This week I want to talk about some special people – people who work so hard and find the time to show up when they are needed and called upon, people who would give there last and stick with you no matter what. They share your emotion and fight the battles with you. They are loyal and take pride in what they do.
The special people I am talking about this week are the true fans of sports. This week my column is for them.
I am talking about the fans who would stand in the cold rain to support us, the ones who would take off from work just to be able to be there with us, the ones whot would go to battle if anyone talks about their team or athletes, the ones who paint their faces with their team's colours. I am talking about the fan who have adopted their team colours as their everyday colour.
No they are not crazy, they just have great passion and love that sometimes gets missed by the athletes.
I had been a witness of a true fan when I was watching an NFL play-off game on ESPN zone on Sunday in Baltimore and I must say she was unbelievably great. She cried, she screamed and bragged all at the same time while trying to eat her food.
She stood and argued all game with another fan, shouting with great enthusiasm how her team were the best in the world and no one could say otherwise. She stood up, sat down, ran across the room chanting and swinging her arms in the air saying "I love my players and this team they are my life."
After watching her have so much passion for her team, it made me realise even more how important the fans are and what great value they have in sports.
Athletes, I want you to think about it the next time you dribble a ball down the line, run through the finish line or hit a six or four to the boundary. Think about the people who are supporting and shouting at you from the side, even if they do not know you.
Think about the times you have been in last place or just having a tough day with your game and that one voice from the sidelines shouts out in support of you and helps pick you up and gives you that extra push of confidence that is needed.
These are the ones I am saying thanks to today, these are the ones who have been helping with our success and have been there at the worst times. These are the true fans.
They mean so much to our sports and we must now reward them with keeping our sports clean, keeping it at a high level so their hard-earned money could be well spent. They do not want to come and see us give half of what we could do or watch us not finish a race.
Remember they have stood many days and supported when others have left, so give them everything you've got and give them something great to chat about when they are with other fans.
Let's make them proud to support what they have great passion and love for, by feeling the same way as an athlete as how they feel as a fan.
So to the fans out there on behalf of all us athletes I want to take this time to say thankyou for what you have done, thankyou for the time and passion have put into sports, thankyou for being a fan.
Until next time!
