Winger Khano in the money
Khano Smith is punching in as one of New York Red Bulls' highest paid earners, according to figures released by the MLS Players Union.
Earlier this week the players' union published all their members salaries, that are currently available, with Smith said to be picking up $120,000 a-year – a huge increase compared to the $46,000 he was previously paid by ex-club New England Revolution.
Only Juan Pablo Angel, Jon Conway, Dane Richards, Jorge Rojas, and Juan Pietravallo are earning more than Smith at Red Bulls.
The 28-year-old signed for the MLS Cup finalists last month from Seattle Sounders who he left before playing a competitive match.
As expected, LA Galaxy's David Beckham was the league's highest earner at $6.5 million, while rounding out the top four money-earners were Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago), $2.9 million; Juan Pablo Angel (Red Bulls), $1.8 million after signing a two-year extension contract; and Freddie Ljungberg, (Seattle), $1.3 million.
The most modest salaries are the $20,100 paid to a handful of young American players.
Smith arrived back from Argentina earlier this week where Red Bulls held a pre-season training camp, and plays his first game on US soil for his new team who take on Crystal Palace Baltimore tomorrow.
He was due to go head-to-head with close friend and national team-mate John Barry Nusum, who joined Eagles USA from USL-D2 rivals Bermuda Hogges last month, but the big striker is set to miss the game through injury.
"It's a shame I won't be playing against John," said Smith.
"I've spoken to him and he said he was in rehab recovering from an injury, I don't believe he'll even be at the match. It's good to be back in the US after our training camp in Argentina.
"It went pretty well, although it felt like we were there a little too long."
Red Bulls take on Eagles USA in their final pre-season friendly at Annapolis' Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
