Jahi Simmons scored the most important goal of his career, and saved Somerset Trojans' season in a pulsating game at Somerset Cricket Club yesterday.

The second half substitute struck in the 90 minute to rescue his side from a defeat that would have left them staring relegation in the face.

Simmons collected the ball on the left wing, cut inside, and fired the ball past Devonshire Colts' goalkeeper Jason Wade to spark jubilant scenes in the West End.

Now, instead of being four points behind yesterday's rivals Devonshire Colts, Dennis Brown's men are just a point from safety.

And it might have been even better for Trojans, but Tahj Wade fired just wide five minutes into injury time in a frantic, physical game that bore all the hallmarks of a relegation scrap.

For their part Colts will be ruing a succession of missed chances that should have seen the game well over, long before Simmons had a chance to score.

Marco Piper gave the visiting team a deserved lead with half an hour gone when he ghosted in at the back post from Sean Perinchief free kick, and powered a header past Saquille Bean.

They should have been two goals to the good by then however, with striker Andre Famous missing two gilt-edged chances to put his side ahead.

First he eased past Trojans defender Sheroy Fubler only to scuff his shot badly, and then he missed moments later when the ball fell to his feet only eight-yards out with the Somerset defence beaten.

Famous wasn't the only culprit, after the break his strike partner Kyle Jones got in on the act as well.

Twice Jones broke the home side's offside trap, twice he found himself one-on-one with Bean, and twice he fired horribly wide when it would have been easier to score.

For their part Trojans once again looked largely ineffective upfront, and rarely threatened other than seeing Desmond Burgess send an effort into the side netting from a corner.

Things improved with the introduction of Adrian Burrows and Jahi Simmons, but still it seemed as if Trojans would fall short.

And then came one last desperate attack, and a draw, and a lifeline that means the relegation battle is far from over.

Southampton Rangers 2

Second half goals from Kamen Tucker and Keemo Smith got Southampton Ranger their second win in a row as they downed Boulevard to keep their title aspirations on track at Southampton Oval.

Tucker's strike early in the first half put the hosts one up in a tense match before Smith's late goal confirmed that his side would keep all three points.
