Wright rules in Laser nationals
over the weekend.
The final rounds of the contest were held in the Great Sound on Saturday and Sunday on a course hosted by Sandys Boat Club.
The first day's competition saw racers having to deal with 12-15 knot winds from the west and sunscreen was the order of the day. Double windward/leeward and Olympic courses were set for the first four races.
The key battles were between Wright and Christian Luthi and Todd Olson and Sarah Lane Wright.
By the end of the day Luthi had seven points and a single point advantage over Wright, while Olson with 13 points led Lane Wright on 14.
The rest of the fleet were also very close with just two points separating Mike Lewis, Martin Vezina, Mark Allerston and Ted Wood.
But on Sunday it was a different story.
The forecast 25-30 knots came in overnight and only moderated in the early morning.
By the time the fleet set sail they had to contend with winds of 18-20 knots which were building all the time.
Not happy to settle for second, Wright brought his A game. A sailor who likes the heavy breeze, he established himself from the off and won all three races.
He led at every mark and was running away from his challengers.
The championship was decided with a resounding win in the final heat -- a gruelling double triangle.
Luthi did his best to keep pace but Wright was too strong, sailing solid beats and steering clear of mistakes.
In the final tally, Wright beat Luthi by two points with Olson third.
Wood emerged from the chasing pack to take fourth ahead of Mike Lewis.
Lane Wright endured a tough day, losing her rig in the first race while sitting third.
Two guest sailors also proved to be competitive over the weekend. Ben Wicks stepped out of his Byte and showed good technique, and Mark Allerston, from the UK, was solid in every direction despite having only just returned from a six month hiatus.
