Zebras earn their stripes in upset over Boulevard
Indications were that PHC had little more than a "puncher's chance'' of beating mighty Boulevard.
They could have been forgiven if they had just rolled over under intense early pressure from the vengeful Blazers.
Instead the young Zebras rolled with the initial barrage only to return and land the knock-out blow that sent Boulevard reeling out of the Friendship Trophy cowering under a 3-0 defeat before a stunned throng at Devonshire Rec.
last night.
Young striker Dave Wolffe opened the scoring for the Warwick side in the first half and Sheridan Ming put the result beyond doubt with two strikes in the second.
"I haven't scored goals in a long time and it feels good,'' said Ming afterwards. "I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time.
"People fail to realise that we're a young team of newcomers. It takes time, but we're finally starting to come together and tonight we pulled out the victory.'' Wolffe announced his presence in the 23rd minute when he fired a blast from the semi-circle, but straight at goalkeeper Lynn Tucker.
Following up two minutes later, team-mate Meshach Wade connected with a volley of a right-wing corner taken by Tokia Russell only to have it halted on the line by Boulevard's Dean Boyles.
The ice was finally broken when Wolffe was on hand to apply the finishing touches to a delicate chip by Ottis Steede. From near the penalty spot Wolffe watched with elation as his volley bounced in off the right upright past a helpless Tucker.
Confidence thus restored, PHC marched on toward the half matching their opponents step for step.
A fired-up Boulevard returned for the second half, but their flame was soon extinguished by Ming.
The diminutive midfielder popped up in the 70th minute when a free-kick midway Boulevard's half was nodded on by Wolffe and Ming slipped undetected behind the defence to side-foot home at the far post.
Eleven minutes later, and with Zebra supporters in full song, Ming added another for good measure as a suddenly suspect Boulevard defence allowed Raynell Lightbourne's cross to drift across the penalty area to a lurking Ming, who controlled and drilled the ball into the "rafters''.
In defeat Boulevard skipper Dwight Warren looked at his side's missed chances as the main cause, saying: "We had chances and didn't finish, the minute they got theirs they took them.
"I'm proud of my team regardless, and I am happy for PHC. We already have some silverware and there's more to get.''
