A bad road accident on the night before Sunday's Lindo's to Lindo's 10K race was the reason why the event had no mile markers on the route, one of the race directors has explained.
The wreckage of the car and bike on South Road, near the junction with Brighton Hill was not fully removed until the road race had actually started.
Consequently, as a result of race officials putting their efforts into co-ordinating with emergency services and preparing for a possible re-routing of the race if needed, there was no time to place mile markers on the course.
Some of the hundreds of runners and walkers who took part were left wondering why there were no mile markers.
Samantha Turner, one of the event directors, said that it was always intended to have markers on the route and that would have been the case had it not been for the exceptional pre-race circumstances.
