Aljame moving back to Cougars

Veteran striker Aljame Zuill will return to Devonshire Cougars from cross-town rivals Colts in a bid to fulfil his Concacaf Champions League aspirations.

The ex-Bermuda international hopes to make his Cougars' comeback in their festive friendly against Trinidad Under-23s at the National Sports Centre on December 30.

During the window transfer, he will rejoin his former team at a crucial juncture of the season with the defending champions vying to retain their Premier Division title, which enabled them to qualify for next year's Concacaf Champions League.

Zuill said he felt he was in need of a fresh challenge as he approached the twilight years of his playing days.

"My decision to leave Colts was down to personal reasons," said Zuill. "It was time for a change, I had to get away from a couple of the negative people that were there.

"I also would like to play Concacaf Champions League football before I retire.

"I've done pretty much everything, played for my country and Bermuda Hogges so this would be my final objective and hopefully we can make some inroads in that competition."

Zuill's surprise transfer serves a major boost for the coachless Cougars, who have often struggled in front of goal this season.

He left Devonshire Rec. three years ago after lifting a title under then coach Andrew Bascome to return to Colts, where he won the First Division and FA Cup in his first season at the club.

He has been training with Cougars for the last month and believes he will be ready to take on Trinidad at the NSC, the scene of his hat-trick heroics for Bermuda against St.Kitts and Nevis back in 2007.

"My first game would be against Trinidad if everything is done and dusted by then. I just need to get the final process done," Zuill said.

"I will do what I need to do and that will be to get myself in good condition. Last year I had one of my worst seasons with injuries and only scored three goals, which is also an extremely low number so I need to step my game up.

"Like I said, I'm aiming for the Concacaf Champions League and the Premier Division title. I'll put the work in and I want to help the side in any way possible.

"I need to work hard to get a spot because nothing is guaranteed. I've been training with the squad for the past month so everything is going to plan.

"I know what I need to do to get my game back up and that's what I'm working on right now."

The Concacaf Champions League is the annual international club football championship for teams from the region (North America, Central America, and the Caribbean).

It replaced the Concacaf Champions' Cup which ran from 1962 to 2008.

The winner earns a berth in the next FIFA Club World Cup, which pits each continental confederation's champion against the others annually.
