Athletes to battle it out for CAC Championships
In preparation for the upcoming CAC Age Group Championships, the Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) will be hosting a track meet this weekend for junior athletes at the National Sports Centre.
The meet, which will be held on Sunday will help identify the youngsters that will make up both the boys and girls squads for the Championships, which is to be held in Freeport, Bahamas on June 18th and 19th.
Only two athletes can compete per age group, with the groups being 11-12 boys and girls, and 13-14 boys and girls, totalling eight athletes.
The Championships are a multi-event competition, with each athlete having to compete in all the events.
The 11-12 boys will compete in the 60metres and 1000 metres, long jump, high jump and baseball throw, while the 11-12 girls will do the 60 metres, 800 metres, long jump, high jump and baseball throw.
In the 13-14 boys age group, athletes will compete in the –80 and 1200 metres, 80 metre hurdles, long jump, high jump, baseball throw and shot put.
Meanwhile in the 13-14 girls age group will participate in the–80 and 1000 metres, 80 metre hurdles, long jump, high jump, baseball throw and shot put.
BTFA president Donna Watson is excited about the weekend and wants to continue the superb season the sport is having after a very successful Carifta Games.
She noted that the upcoming event in the Bahamas will help the BTFA identify the younger athletes that have the potential for specific events such the hurdles and jumping events.
"We currently have about eight athletes competing for the two spots in each age group and will be including the events that will be at the Championships in the track meet this Sunday," said Watson.
"This event has been taking place for several years and I believe Bermuda competed in it several years ago.
"Most of the Caribbean islands use this event to identify athletes with the talent for these specific events and they usually become their specialist in these events.
"As I stated before Carifta, Bermuda needs to get athletes in all of the other events and that would increase our medal count.
"I am very excited about this event and I think this is going to be a great experience for our young athletes and I feel we will be able to put together a great and competitive team.
"As you can see we are giving opportunities to our athletes of all ages this year."
