Bascome beats Bray in final

Bermuda's number one tennis player Andy Bray suffered a rare loss when he was beaten by Jenson Bascome in Saturday's men's singles final of the Island Construction Open at Pomander Gate.

Third-time winner Bray was gunning for his fourth straight title but second-seed Bascome took advantage of his rival's errors on key points to run out a 6-3, 6-3 winner. Bascome also won the event in 2002 and 2003.

There was some consolation for Bray in the men's doubles final as he and James Collieson defeated Bascome and David Thomas in just over an hour, winning 6-3 6-4. Bray and Collieson have now lifted five consecutive men's doubles titles at Pomander Gate.

In the ladies' singles final, top seed Ashley Brooks took her fourth straight crown as she cruised by Jackie Lambert 6-2 6-0. It was Brooks' second singles title this year, having also won the VitaminWater championship at the WER Tennis Stadium in May.

In ladies' A doubles, Brooks teamed with Heidi Coleman to win 6-1 6-3 over Liz Hartley and newcomer Danielle Wright.

And in Mixed Doubles, Bascome and Shonette Wilson defeated Tara Lambert and Romar Douglas in a tie-break in the third set (3-6 6-0 7-6).

In other divisions, 13-year-old Ciara Svenson won the ladies' B singles title defeating veteran Midge Oliver in three sets, 2-6 6-1 6-2, and Jonathan Vanderkar won the men's B singles, beating Michael Salloum 6-4 6-2.
