Bascome's soccer camp to host Valencia coaches
Andrew Bascome and coaches from Spanish giantsValencia will train the Island's future stars at the Next Generation VCF Football Camp in a fortnight.
Bascome, who coaches First Division Robin Hood, has been putting local youngsters through their paces for more than a decade and recently established his ABC Football School – the local partner for Valencia CF.
Running from October 15 to 18, the Next Generation VCF Camp will see Bermuda's youngsters train with Valencia's academy staff who will also hold seminars and practice session for local coaches.
There are also three scholarships available for youngsters who impress the five Valencia coaches to attend the team's training base in Spain.
Bascome said: "I'm excited about this opportunity, I've been doing clinics for some time now and to have a link with a club of this magnitude is a great pleasure."
The four-day camp will be held at the National Sports Centre, North Field for 180 children aged between seven and sixteen, with a minimum of 20 spots set aside for girls.
Invitations have been sent to all domestic clubs and organisations with a viable youth development programme, inviting each to nominate players from the various age groups to participate.
Bascome believes it is important for a smaller nation like Bermuda to discover a football formula that suits its players. And he reckons the Spanish model is the perfect fit.
"We just came back from France and Spain to see how clubs implement the smaller players alongside the so-called giants," he said. "Spain and Brazil are the two countries which do have smaller players that are more than capable of getting the job done.
"It was very interesting to me to see how they developed their players with pass and move football.
"Also, football intelligence is important, what you are going to do with the ball when you get it.
"Our youngsters need to learn different ways of playing but more importantly we need to know which style is best suited for our players.
There will be a limited number of places available for players who meet the requirement but who are not put forward by their clubs.
Those players should email ABC Football School at abcfootballschool@gmail.com by the end of today to register their interest.
Valencia Football Club are ranked third in the all time Spanish La Liga table and are one of only three Spanish clubs to have won more than five international trophies.
n Reggie Lambe came on as a second half substitite against Reading last night but could not prevent Ipswich Town slumping to their first defeat of the season.
The home side scored with just four minutes remaining through Jeff Karacan to win 1-0.
