Beach bags a brace to put Hornets top
Devonshire Cougars 1
Dandy Town Hornets 2
Dandy Town Hornets are the new leaders of the Premier Division after their 2-1 victory over Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Rec. yesterday.
A Raymond Beach brace pushed the St. John's side to the top of the table with goals in either half, with Cougars now one point behind them.
Cougars equalised through Mark Smith just before the half.
It has been the duo of Heys Wolffe and Beach who has been firing on all cylinders over the past six weeks and the match belonged to Beach who has made a habit of sinking his former club a regular occurrence as of late.
It was Beach who managed to get goal side of his marker in the 16th minute to open the scoring when he slotted home his first for the day after good work by Damon Ming on the flank.
The home side responded through Smith in the 36th minute, after he was the recipient of a fumble from Town keeper Mikkail Crockwell on a ball swung into the box.
The striker made no mistake from close range.
Both sides could have put the match beyond doubt shortly after the break.
However, with some woeful finishing and fine saves by both goalkeepers, it wasn't until the 85th minute that the telling blow was struck.
A dangerous free kick just outside the Cougars area was lobbed back across goal by Lashun Dill where Beach latched onto the cross and headed his effort back across goal, and nestling into the back of the net.
Too little too late for Cougars, who seemed as they had given up after the goal, showing no intent of getting themselves back into the match after going down for the second time.
Hamilton Parish 3
Devonshire Colts 1
Three second half goals saw 10-man Hamilton Parish push aside bottom of the table Devonshire Colts 3-1 at Wellington Oval.
Peppers had defender Kaiya Darrell sent off in the first half for a second bookable offense, and allegedly spat on referee George O'Brien in an altercation in which both parties had to be restrained.
Yet despite the setback didn't deter the host from their objective of getting the three points at home, and creating more space between themselves and those lying around the drop zone.
Goals from Chris Caisey Jr., Nashon Smith and a third by Ryan Richardson made sure that they came away with all the points.
Colts scored their consolation goal through Mikre Pace.
PHC Zebras 1
Boulevard Blazers 1
Boulevard Blazers came from behind to earn a crucial point against league champions PHC at Southampton Oval yesterday.
Blazers striker Melchisedec Gibbons scored with a glancing header to cancel out a spectacular volley by Cecoy Robinson who put Zebras' ahead in the eighth-minute.
Both teams enjoyed huge chunks of possession and traded ample chances to come away with maximum points in an absorbing, high-octane Premier clash neither side could really afford to lose.
Blazers remain a point adrift of new leaders Dandy Town but slid from second to third on goal-difference behind Devonshire Cougars, while Zebras slipped from fourth to fifth.
Blazers were rocked on their heels early on after making a mess of a headed clearance, the ball bouncing freely to the onrushing Robinson whose swerving right-footed volley flew into the roof of the net from an angle just beyond the arc.
It was a goal worthy of any highlight reel and one the Zebras winger will long cherish.
Robinson's superb goal did little to knock Blazers off stride. If fact, it seemed to do the complete opposite and with better finishing the visitors could have easily left Zebras with an uphill climb.
Gibbons sent two shots soaring past the uprights while Dion Stovell's inviting cross in the middle rolled untouched across the goalmouth.
Zebras did threaten at the opposite where Jamaican midfielder Seion Givens dragged Mikey Lambe's measured cross wide.
Blazers had a goal disallowed during the latter stages of the first-half. But there was no denying them moments later when Gibbons turned in Stovell's corner kick at the near post to add parity to the final scoreline.
The visitors, however, suffered a setback at the start of the second-half when Ugandan 'keeper Andrew Jjombwe split a finger on his right hand gathering a Quinton Burgess back post header and was replaced by Randy Broadbelt.
After a good old-fashioned tongue lashing from coach Kyle Lightbourne at the half, Zebras settled down and played with more width which presented a daunting challenge for Blazers.
With Stephen Astwood bursting with confidence in the middle of the park and the worrying pace of Robinson on the flank, PHC began to come into their own and stretch their opponents thin.
But subs Dennis Russell and Casey Castle headed wide when scoring seemed easier, and defender Omar Shakir blasted a free-kick against the wall in the closing minutes, enabling Blazers to cling to a valuable point that keeps them thick in the hunt for league honours.
North Village 2
Southampton Rangers 1
North Village continued a spirited revival under new coach Shaun Goater at Bernard Park yesterday.
Rams came from a goal down to see off a Rangers side who wasted a golden opportunity to grab a share of the spoils when midfielder Travis Wilkinson failed to convert from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Kofi Dill handled in the box.
Rangers took the lead on 22 minutes when striker Jahni Bean banged in a half volley from 16 yards to give the visitors a dream start.
But Rams were back on level terms 17 minutes later when skipper Ralph Bean jr converted from the penalty spot after team-mate Pierre Smith went sprawling in the box.
Veteran midfielder Keith Jennings then scored Rams' winner with a 30-yard thunderbolt that flew into the top right-hand corner to give Goater his third win since taking over the helm from predecessor Elliott Jennings.
"When we do all the right things, then we will always get the right results," said Rams skipper Bean.
