Bermuda aces in promotion glory
Bermuda's Davis Cup team return home today having completed the task laid out before them in El Salvador.
The young Islanders gained promotion to Group III after securing one of the two qualifying spots at the end of group play.
Of the five countries in Bermuda's group, only Aruba managed to beat the Islanders who defeated Panama in their final tie 3-0, to confirm their place on Sunday.
Having already beaten Trinidad and Tobago and US Virgin Islands heading into the last day, it was down to the team to sign off a memorable trip to El Salvador by beating Panama.
Gavin Manders strolled onto the court first against Jose Gilbert Gomez and disposed of his opponent 6-2, 6-4, to give Bermuda a 1-0 lead.
Jenson Bascome was next up when he tackled Guiseppe Guarnieri in a very tense match.
Bascome lost the first set 6-2, before clawing his way back into the match, winning the second 6-3.
The match was delicately poised at 6-6, with the winner having to win by two, before Guarnieri retired hurt to seal promotion for the Bermuda.
With promotion already guaranteed, it was a showcase of skill in the last match between Jacob Trott and Nicholas Thuell, who went up against Walner Espinoza and Gomez.
The game was won in straight sets, with the local boys winning 7-6 (5), 6-3 to take to tie three games to nil.
An elated Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) president David Lambert was thrilled with not only the promotion but also the level of tennis played by the youngsters.
He also made special mention of manager Steve Bean.
"I think the promotion is wonderful and goes to show that Bermuda is still in the running," said Lambert.
"The development of the sport is obviously growing and I would like to congratulate team manager Steve Bean, who has guided the Island to three promotions during his tenure.
"As the president of the BLTA, I think I can speak for the board members when I say we are very proud of the players.
"They went down and applied themselves.
"We are pleased with the promotion; we are now back into Division III. Even when we don't win the tournaments we compete in, we are always in the running.
"What we are finding now is that a lot of our Fed Cup and Davis Cup players are playing in university, so the level of play locally is getting higher and higher.
"We always thought that if our players were fit and available, we are of level III calibre and we will see how we get along in the group next year."
Final Positions: 1. Aruba 2. Bermuda 3. US Virgin Islands 4. Trinidad and Tobago 5. Panama.
