Bermuda boys stun favourites
Bermuda pulled off a huge victory against tournament favourites Trinidad and Tobago in the boys' team event of the Junior CASA Championships yesterday.
The hosts overcame the odds to topple Trinidad at the Devonshire courts thanks to victories from Micah Franklin, Robbie Maycock and Noah Browne.
Franklin set the foundation for the victory with a surprise straight-sets victory, while team skipper Maycock continued his impressive form with a convincing 3-0 win.
Browne then gave Bermuda an unassailable lead with a 3-1 victory, before Beckett Simmons gave a spirited performance during his 3-0 defeat.
Roger Sherratt, Bermuda Squash and Racquets Club spokesman, said: "We are absolutely chuffed with this victory. Micah Franklin played out of his skin and really set the tone. We didn't really expect to beat Trinidad and were delighted with the team's progress."
Bermuda girls' team were due to play last night against much-fancied Guyana.
Yesterday morning the local girls narrowly defeated number five seeds Barbados 3-2.
Bermuda's Under-19 number two seed Jenni Schroder started well against Zoe Lisk (Bar), winning in straight games, and Under-13 Emma Keane followed suit against Gylla Mackenzie with a comfortable victory.
Bermuda's Under-19 number one seed Rachel Barnes then faced Cheri-Ann Parris, one of the top players in the Caribbean. Barnes gave Parris a brief shock but eventually lost.
Under-15 player Alex Marshall lost to Asha Gibbs, but Kelly Barnes won against Tanya Marshall 9-3, 9-7, 9-1 to give her team victory in their first team championship match.
On Wednesday night Bermuda's boys team beat number four seeds Barbados 5-0.
Noah Browne dusted himself down after losing the Boys' Under-13 individual final and defeated Matthew Mackenzie without conceding a point.
Under-19 number two seed Micah Franklin followed Browne's lead by toppling Ryan Foster, dropping just two points all game.
Bermuda skipper Maycock beat Ciaron Raymer before Under-13 Beckett Simmons played his best match of the competition to record a victory over a spirited Stewart St. John in straight sets. Under-17 Kristian Muldoon finished the rout by thrashing Jonathan O'Dowd, dropping just two points.
