Bermuda send strong team to CAC Games
The busy summer continues for Bermuda's track and field athletes who have earned the right to represent the Island at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Track & Field Senior Championships.
The meet is being held in Havana, Cuba, from July 3-5.
The team representing the country includes Aaron Evans, Tre Houston, Shianne Smith, Lovintz Tota, Kavin Smith and Sean Trott.
Missing from the Championships, however, will be Aranxta King and Tyrone Smith who have both withdrawn due to commitments.
Athletes had to reach stiff standards and will be competing not only against the Caribbean athletes but also countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba, Venezuela, Panama.
The officials travelling with the team will be Devon Bean and Tamika Williams.
Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president Donna Watson is optimistic about the chances the squad has to be competitive in Cuba and even medal in a few events.
"I am excited to see how Shianne is going to perform against these athletes in the Heptathlon and happy to have Lovintz Tota back competing for Bermuda," said Watson.
"As you may or may not remember he was one of our gold medallist at the Carifta Games when they were held in Bermuda.
"Aaron Evans of course has improved in leaps and bounds since Carifta and should have a great event.
"We were happy that when we asked Kevin if he would like to represent us in the half marathon he was excited to represent Bermuda.
"Tre has been steadily improving his times in the 100 and 200 metres and he should have a good event.
"As you saw from the May 24 results, Sean Trott is one of our up and coming distance running who has a great running career ahead of him.
"There is already a buzz in the Caribbean with how well Bermuda competed this year at Carifta and also how well Bermuda performed at the CAC Age Group Championships.
"We have received many letters of congratulations from the presidents of several associations stating how happy they are to see Bermuda coming back. This is an exciting time for track and field for Bermuda.
"Unfortunately with the Caribbean Games being cancelled that has put a damper on some of the athletes but we have accommodated all of them.
"Tyrone Smith and Aranxta King qualified for this event but will be unable to make this trip due to varying circumstances. Latroya Darrell was also selected but has since been injured and will not be able to travel."
"We are very pleased with the team that has been selected and expect them to compete very well in this event."
