Bermudian heads to World Championships

Bermudian-born rower Michelle Pearson will be competing in Austria this week in the World Junior Rowing Championships on the USA team.

Pearson, who has dual citizenship, rows for the Peddie School in New Jersey and has been rowing for three years.

Included in her young rowing resume is reaching the Junior Worlds US team.

Her father, Kevin Pearson, is confident his daughter has what it takes to be successful in the sport with the right attitude and focus.

"Her progress so far has really been quite remarkable," said Pearson.

"She rowed during the spring of her freshman year with the novices, and by her second year, she was part of the varsity girls four-plus boat, where she rowed in the bow position and won every sprint race they entered, including the US Youth National Championships.

"During her third year, she was moved to the stroke position of the varsity team, and they continued to win every race until the US Youth National Championships final, where they came second.

"She was then invited to the US Junior team selection camp, and was selected to row for the US in the junior girls four-plus boat at the Junior World Championships in Linz, Austria.

"Michelle has also been fortunate in that US colleges, particularly on the East Coast, have very strong rowing programmes, so she is being actively recruited for her rowing.

"She has one more year of high school left, so she is hoping they can put together another strong varsity team next year and make it to Nationals again, and she will also have another year to make the US Junior team again.

"From there she will be looking to enjoy the same success at a university with a Division I rowing programme."

Pearson and her team-mates will begin competing in the World Junior Rowing Championships on July 23.
