Big weekend for Island's swimmers

Some of Bermuda's top swimmers will be in action this weekend at the Rego Sotheby's National Championships at the Saltus pool.

Known as the signature event on Bermuda's swim calendar, the meet requires competitors to first achieve minimum standards set by the USA's governing body.

This year's meet has 55 registered swimmers ranging from 11 to 25 years of age.

In past years, the same championships have produced outstanding performances – such as the 4x100 metres freestyle relay team making the standard for the 1992 Olympic Games and South African Brendon Dedekind carving through the water in a record-breaking 22.12 seconds for two lengths of the pool.

"Many of our swimmers have also been training overseas and this adds to the excitement of the meet," said Assistant National Coach and Aquatics Manager, Ben Smith.

Last weekend saw the Makin Waves Summer Age Group Championships in which several swimmers performed personal bests.

Kaelan Robinson and Sophie Froud both reached the qualifying standard required in order to be invited to join the Bermuda national training squad.
