BLTA may have to turn down Davis Cup invitation

The International Tennis Federation have offered Bermuda the chance to host both the Caribbean 13 and Under Championships as well as the Group III Davis Cup next year.

But Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association officials feel that they may be taking too much on if they accept.

"We have to make a decision in the next couple of weeks. But it will be a strain on our human resources as we have an extremely heavy year in 2010," said David Lambert, president of the BLTA.

"We have teams that have to prepare for the CAC Games, Commonwealth Games, the Davis Cup, the Fed Cup and that is only for the adult players.

"For the juniors, we have the Junior Davis Cup, the Junior Fed Cup, the Youth Olympics in Singapore as well as the Hiddick tournament, the Caribbean 13 and Under and then there is our own ITF Bank of Bermuda Foundation Tournament which we have every year in the summer. It would be difficult to do. All indications are that it will be big year for us in 2010 and to take this on would be quite challenging right now."

Lambert said he believed the invitation to host the Davis Cup and the 13 and Under tournaments came about as a result of the ITF appreciating the way the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Tournament had been run over the years.

"That is an ITF tournament and it has become bigger and bigger," he said.

"They send people down to make sure it is run properly and they have been very pleased with how it has gone in Bermuda.

"That is very flattering – it is a great compliment to us. I am head of the committee (that runs the tournament) and the director but there are so many other people who work hard to make sure it is run smoothly. It is a great compliment to us.

"But we have not decided whether we are going to accept the invitation to host the tournaments.

"We have to be careful about stretching our resources."
