Brangman named as St.George's selector

Gary Brangman, the former Western Stars and Flatts seamer, has been announced as a selector of St.George's' Cup Match team this year.

The retired cricketer has replaced ex-St.George's Cup Match star all-rounder and coach, Noel Gibbons, and has now been presented with the difficult task of choosing the champions team that will rest their crown on the line at Wellington Oval at the end of the month.

Lewis Foggo, St.George's' selection committee chairman, believes Brangman is the right man for the job.

"Gary is a former St.George's Cup Match player who has played cricket most of his life and he is definitely no slouch when it comes to this game," he said.

"He is definitely an asset and is very delighted to be able to take on this role and help with our cricket programme."

Brangman now joins coach Clay Smith, captain Lionel Cann, manager Barry Sousa and chairman Foggo on St.George's' Cup Match selection committee.

The cup holders have scheduled their first Cup Match Trial for this Saturday at Wellington Oval when Foggo and fellow committee members will get a good opportunity to run the rule over those who have made themselves available for selection this year.

"Basically we want to look at the players we are interested in who will eventually pick themselves," Foggo added.

"I have faith in the entire group of players we have at a our disposal and whoever we pick will be good enough to do the job we are looking for them to do."

The East Enders were forced to make five changes to their team last year due to Bermuda's involvement in Twenty20 World Cup qualifiers and that trend is likely to continue this year with several key players expected to walk back into the team to fill voids such as those created by the retirement of key batsman Clay Smith and all-rounder Arthur Pitcher jr and loss of teenaged leg spinner Tre Govia through shoulder injury.

Among the potential candidates to replace the outgoing Pitcher is the St.David's Islander's brother, Justin, who played in a Cup Match Trial match for challengers Somerset earlier this year, while senior national squad all-rounder, Rodney Trott, is likely to replace the injured Govia who debuted as a 15-year-old colt in Somerset last year.

St.David's all-rounder Justin Pitcher has stepped his game up with both bat and ball this season and on current form looks a sure bet to make his entrance onto the Cup Match scene after being named as a reserve last year.

"Justin is definitely a player we are very keen on having a good look at.

"He has always been in our plans and it just might be his time this year," Foggo said.

Also among those seeking to reclaim their places in St.George's' team this year are club skipper Oronde Bascome, specialist wicketkeeper/batsman Chris Foggo, all-rounder OJ Pitcher jr and fiery pacer George O'Brien jr who has been limited to making Commercial League appearances this season after injuring his knee during 2011 World Cup qualifiers in South Africa last April.

"I haven't seen George play myself, but just to know that he is playing again is very encouraging.

"George has been one of the better opening bowlers in the Island and if he is fit and ready he will definitely be looked at," Foggo said.

If fit, O'Brien could form a potentially lethal new-ball combination with either St.George's' stalwart Gregg Foggo or Justin Pitcher.

Another player who has been plagued by shoulder injury lately is specialist batsman Glenn Blakeney jr.

Foggo, however, remains optimistic the Bailey's Bay stalwart will have made a full recovery before the champions' final Cup Match Trial to be held July 25.

"If these players (Blakeney and O'Brien) are fit and able to play we will definitely take them into consideration," the former St.George's wicketkeeper said.

Foggo also confirmed 48-year-old batsman Charlie Marshall, Cup Match's all-time leading run-getter (1,338), has again made himself available for selection.

Marshall scored a memorable unbeaten century (100) as a 19-year-old colt on his Cup Match debut in 1980 at Wellington Oval.
