'Brilliant' Pitcher catch swayed jury
Somerset Cup Match player Dwayne Leverock joined team-mate Janeiro Tucker and Chris Foggo as the only two-time winners of the Cup Match Classic Safe Hands Award after his superb catch last week.
Leverock was awarded the Calvin 'Bummy' Symonds Cup at an award ceremony held by the Butterfield Bank in conjunction with Black Star Communications, organisers of the award.
The spin bowler, who has already announced that this would be his last Cup Match, took two wickets in the Classic to go along with his catch.
"It has been a hard time for me lately with the announcement of my retirement and to win this award is a special moment in my career," said Leverock. "I have won the award previously and when Jekon (Edness) took my catch away from me with Rodney's (Trott) dismissal, I told him 'I will win the award'.
"This is a fitting way to end my career, and special thanks to Black Star Communications. The award is a great award to strive for, a lot of the players look to try and win it so for me to win it a second time is an honour."
Not to confuse the public about his decision to retire, Leverock said he will continue to play cricket locally and for Bermuda.
"I thought about retiring last season but thought I had one more Cup Match in me, so here we are. I thought this would have been our year to win it. Mother Nature came and won the match but that's how it goes.
"I am still involved in cricket, both with Southampton and with the national squad, we are preparing for qualification (next April) which is very important for us to be in the next World Cup."
In addition to winning the Calvin "Bummy" Symonds Cup, Leverock received a $1,000 cash prize, two round trip tickets to one of the gateway cities, new playing kit and dinner for two at Greg's Steakhouse.
Butterfield Bank executive vice president Sean Lee said: "Dwayne accomplished this feat of winning the Safe Hands award with his brilliant catch in the slips which led to the dismissal of Justin Pitcher on the second day of the match."
Also on hand at the ceremony were Black Star Communication's head Rolfe Commissiong and Cup Match veteran Dennis Wainwright who presented the award on behalf of Mr. Symonds.
