Bromby in charge after three races
Star Class sailor Peter Bromby produced another steady showing at the Bacardi Cup in Miami, Florida yesterday to solidify his position atop a star-studded race fleet.
The former Olympian, a graduate of Government's National Sailing Programme at Whites Island, finished second in yesterday's third race to remain firmly on course for a third overall Bacardi Cup crown.
In the three races contested so far, the Bermudian has finished no lower than second among a 63-strong race fleet and with a healthy lead over nearest rival Jon Vandermolen of the US will certainly be the man to beat as the week drags on.
Bromby is joined onboard by another past Olympian, Magnus Liljedhal, who has four Bacardi Cup titles under his belt as crew for two different skippers.
The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) skipper won a first Bacardi title in 2001 and a second two years later.
A total of 15 countries are being represented at the 82nd annual Bacardi Cup that is being co-hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club and the US Sailing Centre which are both based in Coconut Grove.
Elsewhere yesterday, veteran sailor Tim Patton climbed 14 places up the leaderboard to 52nd position at the Audi Etchells Worlds in Melbourne, Australia.
The Bermudian skipper placed 28th in yesterday's third race among a formidable 85-strong race fleet comprised of Americas Cup skippers, World Champions and Olympians.
Making his 20th appearance at an Etchells Worlds, a solid start saw Patton round the first windward mark in fourth behind 1983 Americas Cup winning skipper John Bertrand before eventually falling off the pace in light air conditions that again plagued the race fleet.
Patton's best finish at the Etchells Worlds arrived in 1988 Down Under where over the years he has formed long-lasting friendships.
"The Perth beer tastes best because it is so dry there," he joked.
"The friendships get longer and stronger and the boat is just the most magnificent boat to sail.
"There is just no humidity and there is heaps of winds."
Also flying the Island's banner at the Audi Etchells Worlds is Martin Vezina who is currently placed in 74th position overall after finishing 56th yesterday.
