Burgess set for UK pro trials

Bermuda Hogges' Tyrell Burgess (right) challenges for the ball with Reading Rage's during a PDL match last month. Burgess has been invited for trials at English Conference side, Gateshead United.

Bermuda Hogges' winger Tyrell Burgess has been handed trials by professional English club Gateshead, according to an English newspaper.

The 24-year-old will join the North East-based Conference side for pre-season training next month where he will look to impress manager, and ex-Newcastle midfielder, Ian Bogie.

Burgess is looking for a route back into the pro ranks after being released by Vancouver Whitecaps after just one season.

Gateshead chairman Graham Wood said offering a trial to Burgess was a no-lose situation for the club.

"Burgess has been recommended to us," Wood told the Evening Chronicle.

"He is a good height and age and is keen to play in England with Gateshead.

"His father is paying for his flight and he will train every day with the squad and play in a few friendlies, and we will then asses the situation.

"We are still in the market for seven players and with manager Ian Bogie back from holiday we will push on in our quest to strengthen the squad."

Burgess, who is currently on Bermuda Hogges duty in New Jersey, told The Royal Gazette last month: "I still want to return to the professional game and hopefully playing for the Hogges can help me," he said.

"I've played a few notches higher than the PDL and I know what it's about.

"The franchise at Vancouver has made wholesale changes across the board, on and off the pitch, as they plan for the MLS.

"I was an experienced player taking up one of their international spots so I understand their decision to let me go and have no hard feelings."

Last season saw Burgess make 23 appearances for Canadian outfit Whitecaps, scoring one goal.

Ex-national team coach Kyle Lightbourne handed Burgess his Gombey Warriors debut against Manchester City Youth Academy in 2005, while he made his mark on the international stage with a stunning strike against Cayman Islands in a World Cup qualifier in February, 2008.

Gateshead's first day of training as a professional club since they lost Football League status in 1960 is on July 1.

Their first pre-season friendly is a week later against a Middlesbrough X1.
