Butterfield and Maybury on the crest of a wave

Winners: Round the Island Powerboat Race 2010 winners Jermaine Butterfield and Cleveland Maybury celebrate their triumph yesterday.

Jermaine Butterfield and Cleveland Maybury were all smiles yesterday as they won the 2010 Round the Island powerboat race, outlasting their nearest rivals to take line honours in their D-18 boat.

Anthony and Andy Stoneham in their powerful S-22 and Tonka Simpson and Seth Chetty, in FB-55, rounded out the top three.

For Butterfield and Maybury, who have been trying to put their hands on the golden prize of local powerboating for the past five years, it was a dream come true.

"It feels good to win because we have been trying since 2005 to win and to be able finally to get this win is a huge thing for us," said Butterfield. "The feeling can't be explained and we will go and soak in this and enjoy the moment."

With the smaller boats starting the course before the bigger craft, Butterfield and Maybury had to make up time on those in front while also holding off the their closest rivals in the rear.

While the day was sunny and breezy, Butterfield admitted it was tough going, particularly on North Shore, as they managed the boat as well as they could in the conditions.

"It was very rough out there, the only side that was calm was South Shore but from start to finish it was a good day for us.

"North Shore was very rough, we knew we had to be careful and monitor the water because it was chopping from the sides, and with the boat having a tendency of nose-diving we had to use our knowledge and bring it home.

"We had issues off Elbow Beach where we had a little spill and again at John Smith's Bay but both times we managed to come out unscathed and now we are champions."

The day suffered at least two accidents. The boat driven by Shayne and Maurice Furbert flipped over as they rounded St. David's. Shayne was taken to hospital by ambulance but was due to be released last night.

Also involved in an incident were the father and son tandem Stephen and Brandon DeSilva, with both suffering minor injuries.

The Stonehams won the S class while Simpson and Chetty won the FB class.

Matthew White and Dennis Trott jr. held off Steven Bridges and Shawn Butterfield to claim top honours in the C class, and Mark Lightbourne and Rui Moniz outduelled Jonathon Gaugain and Darin Cassidy in the Thundercat class.

Chad Sutherland and Cameron Harris won the B class, while Darius Zuill and Victor Fishington claimed top prize in the A class.

Ryan Davidge and Geoff Law won the D stock class.

In the Jetski division, Vermonde Virgil took honours in the modified division and Dorann Simons in the stock division.
